Objectives

Narrative objectives1

1. To examine the relationships between the load lifted and ground reaction forces acting on the feet, bench reaction forces acting on the lower scapular region, and lower-limb joint torques and powers by varying the load across several levels within each participant, thereby providing foundational knowledge to help improve bench press performance.

2. To analyze ground reaction forces acting on the feet at several load levels within each participant and clarify the relationship between the load lifted and the coefficient of friction required to prevent slipping between the shoe sole and the floor (required coefficient of friction: RCOF), as well as the distribution of the directions of frictional forces required in the plane of the shoe sole. This will provide foundational knowledge to help prevent accidents caused by foot slipping during the bench press and support the development of slip-resistant shoe soles.

Basic objectives2

Others

Basic objectives -Others

To clarify the relationships between the load lifted during the bench press and reaction forces at the feet and trunk support region, lower-limb joint mechanical parameters, and frictional requirements for preventing foot slipping.

Key inclusion criteria

Men aged 18-39 years at the time of informed consent.
Individuals without any disease or disability that interferes with daily activities or exercise.
Individuals with at least one year of consistent resistance training experience who have performed the bench press at least once per week over the past six months.
Individuals who know and can report their bench press one-repetition maximum (1RM), defined as the maximum weight successfully lifted for one repetition with proper form and without assistance within the past three months.
Individuals who can perform the bench press using the prescribed technique and follow the instructions of the research staff.
Individuals who have received a sufficient explanation of the purpose and procedures of the study, understand this information, and voluntarily provide written informed consent to participate.

Key exclusion criteria

Individuals who are currently receiving medical treatment, have been advised by a physician to restrict high-intensity exercise, or have a history of a disease that may affect their ability to perform high-intensity exercise safely.
Individuals with symptoms that may compromise the safe performance of high-intensity exercise, such as chest pain, palpitations, syncope, marked shortness of breath during exercise, or dizziness.
Individuals who, within the past six months, have experienced an injury or pain, undergone surgery, or received treatment involving the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, spine, hips, knees, ankles, or other relevant anatomical regions that may affect their ability to perform the exercise tasks in this study.
Individuals for whom the timing, lifting technique, or successful completion of their reported one-repetition maximum (1RM) attempt is unclear, making it difficult to safely determine the experimental loads based on the reported 1RM.
Individuals who experience pain during lifting, lift their buttocks off the bench, or receive lifting assistance from a spotter during the warm-up or practice trials.
Individuals who experience chest pain, dizziness, or palpitations before measurement, or whose blood pressure and pulse measurements after seated rest show a systolic blood pressure of >= 160 mmHg, a diastolic blood pressure of >= 100 mmHg, or a pulse rate of >= 100 beats/min, with at least one of these thresholds still met upon repeat measurement after at least five additional minutes of rest.

Other

Other related information

This cross-sectional study examines the relationship between lifting load and biomechanical measures during the bench press exercise. Participants perform bench presses under multiple load conditions based on their self-reported one-repetition maximum (1RM). Ground reaction forces, reaction forces exerted by the bench on the body, and body movements are measured to evaluate the required coefficient of friction between the feet and the floor, lower-limb joint torques, and other biomechanical measures. These analyses aim to characterize the mechanics of body support during the bench press exercise.
