Objectives

Narrative objectives1

To prospectively follow patients who participated in the ASCA-PD study beyond the predefined 1-year observation period and to explore mid- to long-term outcomes, differences in long-term outcomes according to the randomized catheter type in the ASCA-PD study, and factors associated with peritoneal dialysis technique survival.

Assessment

Primary outcomes

Technique failure during a maximum follow-up period of 5 years after initiation of peritoneal dialysis, defined as transfer to hemodialysis for =>30 consecutive days or death; kidney transplantation is not considered technique failure.

Key secondary outcomes

The following outcomes will be assessed during a maximum follow-up period of 5 years after initiation of peritoneal dialysis:
1. Exit-site and tunnel infections, including first episodes, recurrent episodes, and refractory infections
2. PD-related peritonitis, including first episodes, recurrent episodes, and refractory peritonitis
3. Infectious catheter-related complications requiring surgical intervention, including catheter removal, exit-site relocation, unroofing, and cuff shaving
4. Non-infectious catheter-related complications requiring surgical or radiological intervention, including superficial cuff extrusion, omental or fimbrial wrapping, pleuroperitoneal communication, catheter obstruction, and catheter tip malposition
5. Catheter survival considering both infectious and non-infectious causes
6. Transition from PD alone to combined PD and hemodialysis therapy

Other

Other related information

This is a multicenter prospective observational study of patients enrolled in the ASCA-PD study. Patients will be followed beyond the predefined 1-year observation period of the ASCA-PD study, and clinical information obtained during routine clinical care will be collected. No additional therapeutic interventions, examinations, or study-specific visits will be required. Mid- to long-term outcomes of peritoneal dialysis and factors associated with peritoneal dialysis technique survival will be explored.
