Objectives

Narrative objectives1

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of a three-month online odor diary intervention on olfactory function in older adults. Participants will record odors encountered in their daily lives and recall autobiographical memories associated with these odors. Our previous research suggested that a one-month intervention involving odor-evoked autobiographical memory recall may improve olfactory identification ability. The present study extends the intervention period to three months to examine the effects of a longer-term intervention on olfactory function.

Assessment

Primary outcomes

Olfactory identification ability assessed using the Open Essence odor identification test. Olfactory identification will be assessed before and after the three-month intervention, and changes in Open Essence scores from pre- to post-intervention will be evaluated.

Interventions/Control_1

Participants will complete an online odor-autobiographical memory diary for three months. In their daily lives, participants will attend to odors they encounter and use an odor that was particularly memorable as a cue to recall a personally experienced past event (autobiographical memory). They will record the odor and the recalled autobiographical memory in the online diary throughout the intervention period.
