Objectives

Narrative objectives1

The purpose of this study was to clarify, on an actual badminton court, the effects of shuttlecock presence (shadow condition vs. actual stroke condition) on plantar loading characteristics during forehand and backhand forward lunges in badminton players, including its interaction with lunge direction.

Developmental phase

Assessment

Primary outcomes

Regional peak plantar pressure in the forefoot, midfoot, and rearfoot as well as in the medial and lateral regions, contact time, loading rate defined as the rise gradient of the estimated vertical load from initial contact to peak load, pressure-time integral, center of plantar pressure trajectory, and medial-lateral load distribution of the rearfoot

Eligibility

Age-lower limit

18 years-old <=

Age-upper limit

25 years-old >

Gender

Male and Female

Key inclusion criteria

1.Males and females aged 18 years or older and under 25 years
2.Individuals who engage in regular badminton practice of 6 hours or more per week
3.Individuals with 2 years or more of competitive badminton experience
4.Individuals who are right-handed and whose dominant leg, that is, the lunging leg, is also the right leg. This criterion was set to control for the effects of asymmetrical movements in badminton and to ensure consistency in the definition of the dominant leg in motion analysis.
5.Individuals with no problems in uncorrected or corrected visual acuity. This criterion was set to eliminate any influence on visual tracking of the shuttlecock under the actual stroke condition.

Key exclusion criteria

1.Individuals who have sustained a lower limb injury such as a fracture, ligament injury, or muscle strain, or who have undergone a surgical procedure, within the past 12 months
2.Individuals with pain, inflammation, or discomfort in the lower limb at the time of measurement
3.Individuals who have been advised by a physician or physical therapist to restrict physical activity
4.Individuals with a chronic lower limb condition other than in the ankle joint, such as instability following a knee ligament injury or a hip labral tear, that is, any history that could exert a compensatory influence on landing movements
5.Any other individuals judged by the principal investigator or the lead researcher to be unsuitable for participation in this study

Note: Individuals with a history of ankle sprain, including chronic ankle instability, for which at least 12 months have elapsed since the injury and which is not accompanied by pain or activity restriction at the time of measurement, do not meet the above exclusion criteria and will not be excluded. This is intended to secure the target population for the secondary analysis regarding the presence or absence of CAI, which is a secondary and exploratory objective of this study. It also serves to align the 12-month exclusion window described above with the criterion for a coper, that is, an individual who has recovered after injury, as defined by Hertel and Corbett (2019) as at least 12 months having elapsed since the injury.
