Objectives

Narrative objectives1

The objective of this study is to measure and analyze whole-body biomechanics during various sports movements using a markerless motion capture system and musculoskeletal modeling, and to quantitatively assess musculoskeletal loading, including muscle forces, joint moments, and joint compression forces. The study will also examine the associations of biomechanical parameters with sport type, age, sex, physical characteristics, sports experience, and history of sports-related injury to identify high-load movements and factors potentially associated with sports injuries and disorders.

Assessment

Primary outcomes

Musculoskeletal loading during the designated sports movement. Whole-body skeletal data obtained using a markerless motion capture system will be analyzed by musculoskeletal modeling and inverse dynamics to calculate joint moments, joint compression forces, and loading of the relevant muscles at the target joints. The outcome will be assessed during performance of the sports movement, and the acquired data will be analyzed within 2 weeks after measurement.

Interventions/Control_1

Participants will perform prespecified sport-specific movements within an approximately 4 m * 4 m motion-capture area. The movements will be selected in advance for each sport from activities that the participants have already learned and routinely perform during their usual sports participation, such as jumping, landing, throwing, or other sport-specific movements. Each movement will be repeated as necessary while participant safety and the adequacy of data acquisition are monitored.
Whole-body motion during the sports movements will be recorded at a single measurement visit using eight high-speed cameras and a markerless motion-capture system. The visit will also include an interview and physical measurements, including height, body weight, body composition, grip strength, and lower-extremity muscle strength. The total duration of the measurement visit will be approximately 1 hour. The intervention will generally be performed once. When additional measurements are required because of insufficient or incomplete data during the analysis process, the same motion assessment may be repeated after obtaining the participant's agreement.
