Objectives

Narrative objectives1

To examine how the combination of foam rolling, static stretching, and dynamic stretching affects the electrical activity (measured via electromyography, EMG) of seven lower extremity muscles compared to individual interventions or a control condition.

Assessment

Primary outcomes

Normalized electromyography (EMG) activity, expressed as a percentage of the maximal voluntary isometric contraction (%MVIC), for seven lower extremity muscles: Vastus Medialis (VM), Vastus Lateralis (VL), Biceps Femoris (BF), Tibialis Anterior (TA), Gastrocnemius Medialis (GM), Gastrocnemius Lateralis (GL), and Soleus (S).

Interventions/Control_1

Protocol: Seven self-administered static stretches, with two repetitions per exercise. Each stretch was held for 30 seconds at the point of mild discomfort (no pain), followed by a 15-second rest between repetitions. Legs were returned to a neutral position when switching exercises or muscle groups.

Interventions/Control_2

Protocol: Seven unassisted dynamic stretches, with two repetitions per exercise. Each stretch included 5 slow cycles followed by 10 fast, forceful cycles (no bouncing), with a 15-second rest between repetitions and transitions. One stretch cycle lasted ~2 seconds, with controlled movements matching the end position of static stretches. Participants stood upright during breaks.

Interventions/Control_3

Protocol: Each muscle received 4 sets of 45-second rolls, with a 20-second rest between sets. Rolling was performed at a consistent speed (~1 second per direction) along the muscle length without pausing at the end. In combined interventions (static stretching + foam rolling or dynamic stretching + foam rolling), stretching was performed first, followed by foam rolling.
