This study is a secondary analysis of existing data obtained from the following studies already registered in UMIN-CTR: Physiological effects of seascapes from high-rise buildings on young women: comparison with urban landscapes, a crossover test (UMIN000048082) and Physiological effects of seascapes from high-rise buildings on young men: comparison with urban landscapes, a crossover test (UMIN000048325).

"This study is a secondary analysis of existing data obtained from previously conducted visual stimulation experiments. In the original studies, the physiological and psychological effects of visual stimulation with seascapes and urban landscapes viewed from a high-rise building were examined in young women and young men.
The present secondary analysis aims to examine the relationships between baseline physiological states before visual stimulation and physiological responses to visual stimulation with seascapes and urban landscapes, and to clarify the presence and extent of physiological adjustment effects, in which natural visual stimuli may modulate physiological responses according to each individual's baseline physiological state.
This study will not recruit new participants and will not involve any new intervention, measurement, or questionnaire. The data sources are the original studies registered as UMIN000048082 and UMIN000048325."

Investigation of associations between baseline physiological states and physiological responses using existing data
1) Left and right prefrontal cortex activity measured by near-infrared spectroscopy
2) Difference in prefrontal cortex activity between the left and right sides
3) Parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous activity calculated from heart rate variability
4) Heart rate
For each of these indices, associations between baseline physiological values before stimulation and differences in changes in physiological responses between seascape and urban landscape conditions will be assessed.

This study is a retrospective observational study using existing data obtained from previously conducted visual stimulation experiments. No new participants will be recruited, and no new intervention, measurement, or questionnaire will be conducted.
The data sources are the following studies already registered in UMIN-CTR: Physiological effects of seascapes from high-rise buildings on young women: comparison with urban landscapes, a crossover test (UMIN000048082) and Physiological effects of seascapes from high-rise buildings on young men: comparison with urban landscapes, a crossover test (UMIN000048325).
For each physiological index, this study will analyze the relationship between baseline physiological values before stimulation and differences in changes in physiological responses between seascape and urban landscape conditions, in order to examine the presence and extent of physiological adjustment effects. The analysis will include 50 participants for whom the required data are available among the 51 participants in the original studies.
