In the early preschool years (approximately 3-5 years of age), the nervous system undergoes rapid development, and diverse movement experiences play a critical role in shaping overall motor competence, including not only fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, and throwing, but also coordination, balance, and object-control skills. These developmental processes further influence physical activity habits, physical fitness, perceived motor competence, and emotional development, and may contribute to later motor competence, continued sports participation, and the reduction of health disparities after school entry. However, due to differences in preschool, home, and community environments, access to high-quality movement opportunities is not equally distributed. Accordingly, effective support models at the preschool stage, together with empirical evidence of their effectiveness, are needed. Nevertheless, few studies have longitudinally compared children who participate in community sports clubs with non-participants in order to clarify which domains of motor competence are affected and to what extent. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine how participation in a community sports club influences overall motor competence in preschool children.
Efficacy
Approximately 50 children enrolled in a community sports club and 50 non-enrolled children, with both boys and girls included in each group, will be recruited as participants. A total of nine motor performance tests will be administered: a 25-m sprint (running ability), softball throw (object-control skill and upper-limb power), side-to-side hops or repeated lateral jumps (agility and coordination), sit-and-reach (flexibility), handgrip strength (muscular strength), standing long jump (lower-limb power), duration of supported body hold (trunk function and muscular endurance), double-leg stance with eyes open or closed (balance), and a KTK-based lateral movement task (whole-body coordination). Assessments will be conducted under standardized conditions at four time points: at the start of the intervention, after 10 sessions (approximately 3 months), after 20 sessions (approximately 6 months), and after 30 sessions (approximately 9 months). In addition, parent-reported questionnaires will be used to collect information on childrens previous exercise history and daily outdoor play time.
