Objectives

Narrative objectives1

This study aims to investigate the effects of visual-motor illusion combined with visuo-tactile stimulation (VTS) based on the rubber foot illusion on corticospinal excitability and body awareness.

Assessment

Primary outcomes

Motor evoked potentials (MEP) of the tibialis anterior muscle will be measured using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) at rest, during the VMI condition, and during the VTS-VMI condition. The stimulation intensity will be set at 120% of the resting motor threshold, and peak-to-peak MEP amplitudes will be calculated as an index of corticospinal excitability.

Key secondary outcomes

The degree of kinesthetic illusion, sense of body ownership, and sense of agency will be assessed using a 7-point Likert scale from 1 ("strongly disagree") to 7("strongly agree").

Interventions/Control_1

In the VMI condition, participants will observe a horizontally flipped first-person perspective video of left ankle dorsiflexion as movement of the right ankle.

Interventions/Control_2

In the VTS-VMI condition, participants will receive synchronous brush stimulation on the dorsum of the right foot while observing a horizontally flipped first-person perspective video of brush stimulation applied to the dorsum of the left foot. Participants will then observe a video of ankle dorsiflexion movement.
