Objectives

Narrative objectives1

To statistically analyze the association between the daily number of emergency transports for vertigo/dizziness and meteorological factors (temperature, humidity, precipitation, atmospheric pressure, wind speed, and sunshine duration) in order to clarify the impact of weather conditions on the occurrence of vertigo/dizziness.

Basic objectives2

Assessment

Primary outcomes

Association between the daily number of emergency transports for vertigo/dizziness and meteorological factors, including mean temperature, maximum/minimum temperature, diurnal temperature range, mean humidity, precipitation, mean atmospheric pressure, sunshine duration, and wind speed.

Key secondary outcomes

Association of patient characteristics (e.g., age, sex, and triage level) and disease subtypes (e.g., central vs. non-central) with meteorological factors such as temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure.

Results

This retrospective study analyzed 1,401 ambulance-transported patients with vertigo/dizziness at Nippon Medical School Hospital from April 2012 to March 2020. Patient data (age, sex, triage level, diagnosis) were obtained from electronic medical records and analyzed with meteorological factors (e.g., temperature, humidity, pressure, precipitation, wind, sunshine) from the Japan Meteorological Agency. Data collection and analysis are completed, and the main results are under preparation for publication.

Baseline Characteristics

This study analyzed 1,401 ambulance-transported patients with vertigo/dizziness who were brought to Nippon Medical School Hospital between April 1, 2012, and March 31, 2020. The mean age was 59 years, and 63% were female. Most cases were classified as emergent or urgent according to the triage category.

Participant flow

A total of 1,529 patients transported by ambulance with a chief complaint of vertigo/dizziness between April 1, 2012, and March 31, 2020, were identified. After excluding 128 patients who presented with loss of consciousness, limb weakness, or vagal reflexes, 1,401 patients were included in the final analysis.

Adverse events

As this was a retrospective observational study without any intervention or medication, no adverse events occurred as a result of the study procedures.

Outcome measures

The primary outcome was the association between the daily number of ambulance transports for vertigo/dizziness and meteorological factors, including mean, maximum, and minimum temperature, diurnal temperature variation, humidity, precipitation, atmospheric pressure, sunshine duration, and wind speed. The secondary outcomes included associations between patient characteristics (e.g., age, sex, triage level) and disease subtypes (e.g., central vs. non-central) with meteorological factors.

Other

Other related information

This retrospective observational study was conducted at the Department of ER and General Medicine, Nippon Medical School Hospital. The study analyzed ambulance-transported patients presenting with vertigo/dizziness between April 1, 2012, and March 31, 2020. Patient data, including age, sex, date of visit, triage level, and diagnosis, were extracted from electronic medical records, and meteorological data (temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, precipitation, wind speed, and sunshine duration) were obtained from the Japan Meteorological Agency (Tokyo Meteorological Observatory). All data collection and analyses have been completed, and the manuscript is currently under preparation for submission.
