We conducted a literature search using the following databases: PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, and Igaku Chuo Zasshi (Ichushi-Web).
For searching international literature, the following search terms were used: "critical care ", "intensive care", "critical care nursing ", "intensive care units ", "nurse ", "nursing ", "nursing staff ", "adaptation ", "adjustment ", "acclimatization ", and "role transition ".
For Ichushi-Web,the corresponding Japanese search terms were: "critical care ", "ICU ", "critical care nursing ", "intensive care nursing ", "nurse ", "nursing ", "nursing staff ", "workplace adaptation ", "social adaptation ", "psychological adaptation ", and "transition ".
No restrictions were set on the publication year, allowing for a broad search. Literature written in Japanese and English was included.
The extracted data from each article included the title, author(s) and publication year, country, objective, field, participants, study design, and results (primary outcomes).
