The search databases used were PubMed, the Cochrane Library, the Physiotherapy Evidence Database, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, the Igaku Chuo Zasshi, and Medical Online. The search terms were "stroke" OR "cerebrovascular disorder" OR "brain infarction" OR "cerebral infarction" OR "lacunar" OR "brain injury" AND "hybrid assistive limb" OR "HAL" OR "single joint hybrid assistive limb" OR "the single-joint hybrid assistive limb" OR "HAL-SJ" OR "exoskeletal upper limb robot" AND "upper limb motor function" OR "upper extremity". The inclusion criteria were as follows: the study was conducted on patients with stroke, the study evaluated upper limb motor function, the study described the effective use of HAL-SJ, and the study was written in Japanese or English. The exclusion criteria were as follows: the study was an academic conference abstract, commentary, special feature, or review paper.
