The purpose of this study is to clarify the effects of a health promotion intervention, based in community supermarkets as food environment resources, on improving diet variety among community-dwelling older adults.

Changes in diet variety at the 3-year follow-up

Key secondary outcomes

At the 3-year follow-up:
- Changes in the consumption frequency of 10 food items that constitute diet variety questionnaire (fish and shellfish, meat, eggs, milk, soybeans and soybean products, dark green and yellow vegetables, seaweed, potatoes, fruits, and fats and oils).
- Changes in awareness, knowledge, beliefs, and intentions regarding behavior change (diverse food intake).
- Purchasing volume (quantity-based and price-based) of the above 10 food groups in supermarkets.
- Changes in frailty prevalence.
- Changes in physical function.

Intervention Group: For three years, supermarkets assigned to the intervention group will conduct a campaign (intervention) to promote improvement in diet variety (information, education, and support delivery etc.).

Key inclusion criteria

Members of the supermarket chain, which serves as the research field, aged 60 to 84, and who can respond to the survey questionnaire on their own.

Key exclusion criteria

Individuals residing in long-term care facilities, or those unable to visit supermarkets for regular shopping (excluding individuals who, through family assistance or other means, are able to regularly visit supermarkets for daily shopping).
