To investigate the trends and outcomes of endoscopic thyroidectomy for thyroid carcinoma, targeting cases registered in the Tokyo Cancer Registry, including those before and after the procedure became covered by insurance in 2018. A comparison with open surgery will also be conducted.

Patients registered in the Tokyo Cancer Registry between 2012 and 2020, with ICD-O3 code C739 and excluding ICD-10 code C73.
Histopathological diagnosis other than papillary or follicular thyroid carcinoma, and cases where the type of surgery (endoscopic or open) is unclear.

Objective:
To investigate the trends and outcomes of endoscopic surgery for thyroid carcinoma using data from the Tokyo Cancer Registry.
Design:
Retrospective observational study using data from the Tokyo Cancer Registry.
Setting:
This study utilizes the Tokyo Cancer Registry data. Data extraction and analysis will be conducted ensuring confidentiality and compliance with all applicable regulations.
Participants:
Patients registered in the Tokyo Cancer Registry between 2012 and 2020 who underwent either endoscopic or open thyroid surgery.
Main Outcome and Measure:
The primary outcome is overall survival (OS). Secondary outcomes include disease-specific survival, 90-day and 180-day mortalities from diagnosis, the transition of endoscopic eligibility rates, and an evaluation of factors influencing the choice of endoscopic surgery.
