To determine whether a training workshop for senior orthopedic residents improved ankle kinematics during the ankle manual anterior drawer test (ADT) and instability assessment using cadaveric models with lateral ankle ligament injuries.

To determine whether a training workshop for senior orthopedic residents improved ankle kinematics during the ankle manual anterior drawer test (ADT) and instability assessment using cadaveric models with lateral ankle ligament injuries.
We evaluated the examination technique using a three-dimensional motion analysis system, with the ATFL length change. The examiners also assessed ankle instability in three grades, and the percentage of correct answers before and after the workshop was evaluated.

Before the workshop, the ATFL length changes were 2.4 mm, 7.6 mm, and 6.1 mm in the intact, ATFL-cut, and ATFL/CFL-cut ankles, respectively. After the workshop, they significantly increased to 3.2 mm, 10.0 mm, and 8.4 mm, respectively. However, the proportion of examiners with correct instability assessments did not increase after the workshop.

Twenty senior orthopedic residents (3 females and 17 males, mean age, 28 years) were recruited from our university hospital. They had experiences in a mean of 3.2 years of general medicine and 1.2 years of orthopedic surgery.

We evaluated the examination technique using a three-dimensional motion analysis system, with the ATFL length change. The examiners also assessed ankle instability in three grades, minus (no instability), plus (instability), and double pluses (gross instability with a sulcus sign), with the correct assessments of minus for the intact ankle and double pluses for the ATFL-cut and ATFL/CFL-cut ankles.
