In Japan, there are no guidelines for PONV control, and the antiemetic drugs recommended in the Consensus guidelines for the management of postoperative nausea and vomiting; the guidelines, are often different from the ethical drugs used by medical institutions for insured treatment. Furthermore, many of the antiemetic drugs recommended in the guidelines are not ethical drugs used by medical institutions for medical treatment. In recent years, measures against PONV have mainly been taken by anesthesiologists in consideration of the guidelines and enhanced recovery after surgery; however, the awareness of the nursing staff may be low, and the actual situation is unclear. The purpose of this study was to clarify the actual status of nurses' awareness of PONV.

Results
A nationwide cross-sectional survey of 401 hospital nurses in Japan examined awareness, knowledge, clinical experience, and information sources related to postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). Although 67.3% had experience caring for patients with PONV, only 57.6% demonstrated conceptual understanding. Recognition that the Japanese term and "PONV" are equivalent was the strongest predictor of conceptual understanding (OR=21.99, 95% CI 7.43-65.14).

Baseline Characteristics
A total of 401 hospital nurses participated in the study. The mean age was 40.5 (SD 9.6) years, with 336 females (83.8%) and 65 males (16.2%). The mean duration of clinical experience was 15.9 (SD 9.2) years, and 295 participants (73.6%) had experience in perioperative nursing. The main work settings were hospital wards (266, 66.3%), outpatient departments (45, 11.2%), operating rooms (25, 6.2%), intensive care units (16, 4.0%), and emergency departments (16, 4.0%).
Participant flow
Hospital nurses who met the eligibility criteria were recruited from an online survey panel. The survey was conducted on September 11, 2024, and was closed when the target sample size of 400 participants was reached. Responses were obtained from 401 participants, all of whom were included in the final analysis.
Adverse events
No adverse events were reported.
Outcome measures
Primary outcome: Conceptual understanding of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV).
Secondary outcomes: Awareness, knowledge, clinical experience, and information sources related to PONV.
