Interventions/Control_1

The participant performs a 1-minute arm curl (expansion and contraction of the elbow) in 13RPE and measures a capillary index. Before participants performed a 1-minute arm curl, they are measured ABI,CAVI,blood pressure, body composition, bone density, physical activities. The turn of the examination is carried out at random.

Results

There were 20 participants with a mean (SD) age of 67.1 (5.8) years. The capillary flow rate significantly changed, and the capillary density significantly changed, which included a significant increase in the non-exercising limb. Significant correlations were observed between the nailfold capillary diameter and body fat mass, the capillary diameter and physical activity, and the capillary density and bone mineral density.

Baseline Characteristics

Inclusion criteria are as follows:

Community-dwelling elderly individuals aged 60 or older who do not have a regular exercise habit
Individuals who meet the criteria for hypertension at the time of measurement
Individuals who have been informed about the study and have given their consent to participate
Exclusion criteria are as follows:

Patients with a systolic blood pressure of 180 mmHg or higher or a diastolic blood pressure of 110 mmHg or higher
Individuals requiring acute treatment for acute coronary syndrome, unstable angina, or other conditions
Individuals deemed ineligible for the study by the investigator for other reasons and those with contraindications to exercise therapy as outlined in the American College of Sports Medicine's "Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription" (9th edition)

Participant flow

This study enrolled community-dwelling elderly individuals with hypertension who attended public facilities in Tsukuba City, Japan, between December 2022 and January 2024 (Figure 1). Of the 23 eligible participants, 20 provided informed consent.

Adverse events

All participants completed the experiments without any difficulty or side effects.

Outcome measures

We measured the acute effects of reperfusion on nailfold density, flow, and diameters. Secondary outcomes included the correlations between microvascular parameters and other health-related indicators.
