NO
The main cause of aspiration pneumonia is aspiration of saliva-containing bacteria, and the risk of developing the disease increases with the number of bacteria aspirated. Therefore, oral management centered on brushing is widely practiced to reduce the number of bacteria in saliva, but brushing causes plaque to fall into the mouth, which significantly increases the number of bacteria in saliva during brushing. Therefore, brushing methods using water, moisturizing gel, povidone-iodine-containing mouthwash, and povidone-iodine-containing gel are investigated for patients at high risk of aspiration pneumonia, to investigate brushing methods that do not increase the number of bacteria in saliva.
Efficacy
Percentage change in the number of bacteria in saliva before and after each brushing method.
The measurement is not invasive and no follow-up is performed after the measurement.

A total of six participants (four males and two females) were enrolled in this study. The mean age was 51.83 years (+/- 15.11). All participants required assistance with toothbrushing and were either older adults requiring long-term care or individuals in need of support for oral cleaning. No acute illnesses were present at the time of enrollment, and routine oral care was provided daily by caregivers or facility staff prior to the intervention.
Informed consent was obtained, followed by intervention (toothbrushing using water, toothbrushing using a moisturizing agent, and toothbrushing using a mixture of povidone-iodine gel and moisturizing agent), and finally, the procedure was concluded with water rinsing.
