In Japan, several types of acetate-containing bicarbonate dialysate and one type of citric acid-containing bicarbonate dialysate are used. Citric acid-containing bicarbonate dialysate contains a higher bicarbonate concentration and more total alkalinizing agents than acetate-containing bicarbonate dialysate. It therefore has the advantage of improving metabolic acidosis and the disadvantage of metabolic alkalosis. However, there are no reports regarding life prognosis. The aim of this stufy is to compare mortality between bicarbonate dialysates containing acetate and citric acid.
