Objectives

Narrative objectives1

We conducted a medical record survey of outpatient dialysis patients at our hospital who were eligible for additional benefits such as exercise guidance during dialysis, and compared the physical function evaluations conducted at the beginning and end of the additional calculation to verify the effectiveness of exercise therapy and to examine patient background information.

Assessment

Primary outcomes

Comparison of Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) between two groups measured at the start of calculation of additional exercise guidance during dialysis and 90 days later

Key secondary outcomes

Verifying the correlation between dialysis efficiency, nutritional indicators, Elderly Status Assessment Set (E-SAS) results, and primary endpoints
Analysis of qualitative information (patient statements regarding exercise, patient questionnaires)

Key inclusion criteria

At Ehime Prefectural Imabari Hospital, we calculated additional benefits such as exercise guidance during dialysis during the period from April 2023 to July 2023, and targeted outpatient dialysis patients who underwent supervised exercise therapy at our hospital.

Key exclusion criteria

Patients who meet the contraindications for exercise stress testing as stipulated in the "Kidney Rehabilitation Guidelines" or who have difficulty continuing exercise during the intervention period will be excluded.

Results

Pre- and post-comparison of SPPB measured at the beginning and at the end of 90 days after the calculation of the additional fee for exercise guidance during dialysis showed significant differences in the chair stand-up test and the total score. In the E-SAS results, the "human relations" item tended to be lower than the other items. A strong correlation was shown between initial SPPB and E-SAS total. No serious adverse events occurred throughout the intervention period.
