Male and Female
Patients who underwent esophagectomy for esophageal cancer between July 2010 and March 2019 were identified from a Japanese nationwide inpatient database.
The exclusion criteria were as follows: age <18 years, combined surgery for laryngeal or hypopharyngeal cancer, missing data on body mass index, having received general anesthesia on the day after esophagectomy, and discharge on the day of or the day after esophagectomy.

This retrospective cohort study was conducted using the Diagnosis Procedure Combination database, a Japanese nationwide inpatient database More than 8 million hospital administrative claims data and discharge abstracts from more than 1200 hospitals are collected annually in this database. All university hospitals are required to participate in the database, while other hospitals participate on a voluntary basis.
