Sixty-two infants were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 32) or the control group (n = 30). Thirty-nine infants (19 and 10, respectively) completed follow-up through 3 years of age.

Sex (male/female), gestational age (weeks), birth weight (g), mode of delivery (vaginal/cesarean), and 1-minute Apgar score were 14/11 vs. 12/10, 38.8+/- 1.0 vs. 39.0+/-1.2, 3072+/- 346 vs. 3074+/-397, 27/5 vs. 24/6, and 9.0+/-0.2 vs. 9.0+/-0, respectively, in the intervention group (n = 32) and control group (n = 30), with no significant differences between the groups.
At randomization, there were 32 and 30 infants in the intervention and control groups, respectively. At 1, 2, and 3 years of age, 21 and 17, 20 and 11, and 19 and 10 infants, respectively, were followed up.
No advers event reported.
Primary outcome: Defecation records through 1 year of age.
Secondary outcomes: Physical growth, incidences of allergic diseases, neurodevelopment outcomes, Child-Rearing Support Questionnaire, and gut microbiota at 1,2, and 3 years of age.
