Results

Body weight, weight-adjusted thicknesses subcutaneous fat and abdominal cavity, and blood triglycerides in athletea group significantly increased after 6-month follow-up. The diversity of gut microbiota significantly decreased. No significant changes were observed in the control group. The change in body weight (%) in athletes significantly correlate with those of blood triglycerides (rs = 0.436) and Bacteroides (rs = -0.631).

Results Delayed

Delay expected

Results Delay Reason

1) The period of data collection was extended due to the job search of the student in charge of this project.
2) The graduation of the student in charge of this project.

Date of the first journal publication of results

Baseline Characteristics

1) Twenty-two college freshmen who were members of the American football or rugby team (athletes)
2) Ten healthy college freshmen with no exercise habits (controls)

Participant flow

[Athletes group]
Initial number of subjects: 24, including 2 dropouts (because they stopped participating in club activities)
[Cotrol group]
Initial number of subjects: 10, no drop-out

Adverse events

none

Outcome measures

Body fat, lean body mass, thicknesses of skeletal muscle (sum of anterior and posterior upper arm, abdomen, anterior and posterior thigh), subcutaneous fat (sum of directly above each skeletal muscle), and abdominal cavity, blood properties related to glucose and lipid metabolism, diversity of intestinal microbiota, and relative occupancy at genus level of major gut bacteria.
