The purpose of this systematic review is to examine the association between energy drink intake in adolescence and later substance use focusing on prospective cohort studies.

Results: Five studies met the eligibility criteria. ED consumption was positively and significantly associated with the initiation of substance use in adolescence involving alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, and prescription stimulants and analgesics. However, the overall risk of bias in the included studies was severe.
