| Assessment | |
| Primary outcomes | Poor tolerance of negative fluid balance in 24 hours
Poor tolerance of negative fluid balance was evaluated by the development of hypotension, or the need for fluid expansion, or the need for vasopressors. When NFB was induced by furosemide, acute kidney injury was also considered as a criterion of poor tolerance. |

| Key inclusion criteria | Mechanically ventilated patients who have been endotracheally intubated for respiratory failure with hemodynamic stability were included | |||
| Key exclusion criteria | (1) baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) <30 ml/minute/1.73m2;
(2) known pregnancy; (3) evidence of obstructive uropathy (for example, hydro-ureter) (4) patients with allergy or known sensitivity to loop diuretics (5) achievement of AKIN stage III criteria; (6) evidence of volume depletion at the time of furosemide administration |
