Hesitation of movement initiation are observed in clinical practice for patients with musculoskeletal pain. However, it is unclear whether subjective pain intensity induced such hesitation. We investigated a relationship between the pain and hesitation of movement initiation for patients after surgery.

Pain intensity did not significantly correlate with movement outcome. A pronounced correlation was identified between the fear of movement and parameters such as velocity and movement hesitation time. Hesitation at 1 day postsurgery was significantly correlated with the DASH score at 30 days. Velocity at 7 days postsurgery was significantly correlated with the DASH score at 30 days, and the velocity at 14 days postsurgery was significantly correlated with the DASH score at 30 days.

Subjects were postoperative patients with distal radius fractures.
Patients were excluded if they had: (1) severe chronic uncontrolled pain at a site other than the surgical wrist before the surgery; (2) stroke or other central nervous system disorder; or (3) a fracture other than distal radius fractures.
Twenty patients fulfilled the criteria, mean age was 69.7, SD was 10.2. Women were 18.
Written informed consent was procured from patients who were subjected to surgical procedures following their hospital admission.

Pain intensity (both pain at rest and movement pain) was assessed on a visual analogue scale (VAS: 0 = no pain; 100 = highest possible degree of pain). Fear of movement was also assessed by a VAS (0 = no fear; 100 = highest possible degree of fear).We used the the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand Questionnaire to assess the motor function of the wrist.
Movement characteristics were assessed by means of a finger tapping task. We measures the distance between the thumb and index finger and calculates the peak velocity, the peak amplitude of the opening between the thumb and index finger, and the duration of movement-initiation hesitation
