感覚ゲーティングは、脳が感覚情報を選択的に処理する仕組みであり、ヒトの生存に欠くことのできない重要な機能である。この機能は、主に聴覚誘発電位であるP50成分を用いて検討されてきており、統合失調症患者では、P50成分の振幅低下が報告されている。つまり、統合失調症患者は感覚ゲーティングが低下している。一方、20名の健常男性を対象に、体性感覚および聴覚モダリティにおける中潜時誘発電位のゲーティング間の関連性を検討した研究によると、早期感覚ゲーティングレベルは、モダリティ特異的である可能性が示された。しかしながら、これまでの研究において女性の月経周期による影響は明らかにされていない。我々の先行研究では、P50成分以降に出現する体性感覚および聴覚誘発電位の後期活動を測定し、その月経周期および男女差をを検討した。その結果、各モダリティの感覚情報処理に対する月経周期の影響が異なる可能性を発見した。そこで、後期活動よりも前段階にある早期感覚処理(感覚ゲーティング)に対して、月経周期を考慮した性差が影響を与えるか否かについて検討することを目的とした。

Sensory gating is a mechanism by which the brain selected sensory information processes and is an essential function for human survival. This function has been primary investigated using the P50 component of auditory evoked potentials (AEPs), and a reduction in the amplitude of the P50 has been reported in patients with schizophrenia. In other ward, patients with schizophrenia indicating impaired sensory gating compared to health groups. On the other hand, a study examining the relationship between gating in middle latency evoke potentials across somatosensory and auditory modalities in 20 healthy males suggested that early sensory gating level may be specific modality. However, influences by the menstrual cycle has not been clearly in previous studies. In our previous studies, we measured late activities of somatosensory and auditory evoked potentials following the P50 amplitude, examined their relationship with the menstrual cycle and sex differences. The results suggested that influence by the menstrual cycle on the sensory information processing may be differ depending on the modalities. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate whether sex differences taking the menstrual cycle into account affect early sensory processing (i.e., sensory gating), which occurs prior to the late-phase activities.

月経周期を考慮した性差がヒトの脳の感覚ゲーティングに与える影響を検討するために、体性感覚誘発電位(SEPs)および聴覚誘発電位(AEPs)を脳波(EEG)を用いて記録し、その月経周期による影響および性差を評価する。その際、女性は月経期(月経開始後2-4日目)および排卵期(排卵期キットで陽性後2-3日目)の2つの期間で測定する。排卵検査は、尿検査を使用し評価する。これにより、感覚ゲーティングへの月経周期および性差による差異を検討することが出来る。その結果、脳内の感覚情報処理に対する月経周期または性別による違いを明らかにすることが出来る。

To investigate the effects of sex differences taking the menstrual cycle into account on sensory gating in the human brain, we recorded somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) and auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) using electroencephalography (EEG) and evaluated the influence of both the menstrual cycle and sex differences. Female participants were assessed during two distinct phases; the menstrual phase (2-4 days after the onset of menstruation) and the ovulatory phase (2-3 days after a positive result using an ovulation prediction kit). Ovulation was evaluated via a urine based test. This approach allows us to examine differences in sensory gating attributable to the menstrual cycle and sex. As a result, we aim to clarify whether sensory information processing in the brain differs according to menstrual phase or biological sex.
